The 34th issue of Roberta Gregory’s 1991-2004 cult classic is as bitting as it is thematically and emotionally mature. It begins with the creator’s comic persona giving a personal update on what she’s been up to since the previous issue including her animation work for the obscure Oxygen Network anthology series X-Chromosome. Looking in retrospect, these bits become a neat graphic time capsule documenting moments in Gregory’s life similar to a diary entry.

Only a Dream, the issue’s opening story, is a surreal stream-of-consciousness dream of the author unwittingly finding herself working at a brothel. I can’t say this two-pager elicited anything strong in me besides “Well, that’s something.” Thankfully, things quickly pick up by the next installment of the Bitchy Bitch comic “Child’s Prey” which I would venture to state is not only the strongest comic in #34 but also one of my favorite short comics I’ve read.
