Pure Joy Comix #1 Review (NSFW as if the cover wasn’t enough to tell you that)
From the Icelandic Codpiece Comic Studio that brought you L.A. Comics comes Pure Joy Comix which lives up to its titular promise, delivering killer after killer material of joyous sex comedy.
Wildroot in “On the Road to Babylon” — Written by George DiCaprio (father of Leonardo DiCaprio!) and drawn by animation storyboard artist Rich Chidlaw, the five-page story involves blue/orange-haired hippy Wildroot who hitches a ride with a seemingly-normal middle-class man who is anything but. It’s one of those cases where you get the expectations reversal, but feel increasingly uncomfortable as things escalate until the relief of a witty punchline that makes the entire joke funny in retrospect. Read it once for the discomfort and a second time for the wit.
The Hole Story — A doctor who takes a smear sample from a patient to indulge in his own perverted fantasies. The doc is your typical dirty old man, but just as the comic is feeling generic, it drops a splash page that’s easily the most inventive visualization of voyeurism.
The Legend of Countess Erica Bon Klitt — Good luck figuring out who did this one because it’s another one of those entries anonymously attributed to Icelandic Codpiece Comic Studio. Telling the true* story of the eponymous WWI hero, Bon Klitt, who singlehanded took down the Allies using her most powerful weapon, copulatory strangulation, which even the cold-hearted homosexual Major Ashly Cahn wasn’t immune to. Some men of comparative sexual prowess such as Luke Prescot have attempted to overpower her to no success and their untimely demise. Her ostensible defeat only came after her Fokker orgasmically crashed with her in it, never to be seen again.
* Sam’s Studios doesn’t assume any responsibility for suckers who report this as historical fact.
Easily making my pick for best entry in the anthology, this comic nails it with its increasingly absurd foreplay and climax (yep, my wording is very intentional).
Fast Food Becomes of Age — Also anonymously credited under ICCS, it’s a hysterical double page spread of sex fast food puns such as the following:
“Tell her I’m eating out!”
“Boy! That is what I call fill-ing…”
“It’s clit licking good!”
Lookin' Like a Queen in a Saleors Dream — Done by Jim Himes, this one starts somewhat normally with a sailor spending the day with a young woman he lusts after. However, by the second of the comic’s three pages it crosses into Lychian territory of surrealistic imagery and ambiguity, an interesting deviation from the book’s voyeuristic tone I can respect even though it’s my least favorite entry.
Valley of the Dildosaurs — In our final comic, Rich Chidlaw returns with phallic, buxom-shaped, and tentacled monsters roaming the terrains of an island shaped like a woman right to the anatomical details in which three explorers find themselves in. This one is just plain, stupid fun.
My Favorite Comics Ranked:
The Legend of Countess Erica Bon Klitt
Fast Food Becomes of Age
On the Road to Babylon
The Hole Story
Valley of the Dildosaurs
Lookin’ Like a Queen in a Saleors Dream
Overall, Pure Joy Comix is a consistently hilarious romp. I enjoyed it way more than LA Comics #2 since it didn’t feel nearly as confined in subject matter and allowed itself to go as stir-crazy as it wanted.
